MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. The Westlake High School football team will try to keep its slim playoff hopes alive when it travels to Croton-Harmon at 1:30 p.m. Saturday for the Tigers homecoming game.
Westlake is 2-3 and has alternated wins and losses all season. The Wildcats lost a heartbreaking 17-14 game to Nanuet last week, which potentially knocked Westlake out of playoff contention. Westlake absolutely must win its final two games, and even that might not be enough to get the Wildcats into the postseason.
Westlakes strength is in its running game, offensive line and defensive line. Senior Dan Bassi has spearheaded the Wildcats offense all season, while fellow senior Tommy Hopkins has anchored the offensive and defensive lines.
Croton will need to buckle down on defense and slow Westlakes ground game if it wants to win this game.
Croton also needs a win to keep its slightly better playoff hopes alive. The Tigers started out 3-0 but have lost their last two games and now sit in the middle of the Section 1 Class B standings with three other 3-2 teams. A loss likely would drop Croton out of the playoff picture.
The Tigers had a rough outing against Ardsley last week as they allowed Gabe Kardish to catch six passes for 127 yards and three touchdowns and let George DiFiore rush for 119 yards and a touchdown. Crotons offense also sputtered as DiFiore returned an interception for a touchdown and scooped up a fumble.
Croton has been relatively consistent on both sides of the ball this season. Croton has averaged 17 points per game and has allowed 20 points per game, including 27 to Our Lady of Lourdes and 39 to Ardsley in the Tigers last two games.
