Westlake Soccer Senior Solis Nets Crucial Goal

MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. – Westlake High School soccer player Edgar Solis has played in many games for the Wildcats.

Solis has been playing for Westlake since eighth grade and is now in his senior season. But on Wednesday, he kicked one of the most important goals of his career in the final minutes of the Wildcats’ game against Fox Lane to lift Westlake to a 2-1 win.

“This is definitely one of the bigger goals I’ve scored,” Solis said. “We had a rough start to the season, first losing in the Mount Pleasant Cup and then losing to Alexander Hamilton, in overtime, too. So winning before going into overtime is a big win, not having to deal with two other halves.”

Solis fired a shot to the left post and past the goalkeeper with less than four minutes remaining to help the Wildcats avoid overtime.

Westlake coach Nick Romeo, now in his seventh season as varsity head coach, praised his captain after the game.

“Edgar made a really nice play,” Romeo said. “He’s a senior on our team. He’s a captain, a leader. We really wanted this game after a tough result on Saturday (against Alexander Hamilton). I wanted to make sure that we stepped up, and the captains really did today.”

The win moved Westlake to 1-0 in league play and 2-2 overall. The Wildcats now prepare for a stretch of four games in six days, including three league games and back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday against Croton and Harrison.

Solis hopes his game-winning goal will spark a winning streak for the Wildcats.

“(It will) definitely start us off with a better start to the season,” Solis said. “We’re 1-0 now in the league, so we’ll keep it going now, hopefully.”
