THORNWOOD, N.Y. – Westlake senior Edgar Solis has watched the tape of his semifinal match in the 2012 Section 1 Division II wrestling championships many times, and, after each viewing, he still can’t believe the end result.

“I was leading by one point with five seconds remaining and I couldn’t hold him down,” said Solis, who finished third at 152 pounds. “He did a stand and got the reversal for two points. I couldn’t believe I could not hold him down for the final five seconds.”

Solis, the 2011 Section 1 Division II champion, made it clear to himself that he will never allow that to happen again as he prepares for the 2012-13 season.

“I thought I had the match won, so that just showed me that you have to wrestle hard and stay focused all six minutes,” said Solis during a water break in practice Wednesday.

Solis, who is also a soccer standout, addressed this during the off season by hitting the weights. Solis became a regular in the weight room.

“I wanted to get stronger because I felt I wasn’t as strong as my opponent in that match,” Solis said.

Along with the weights, Solis focused on his conditioning and his mental approach.

“I feel more fit and in better shape after doing a lot of cardio work,” Solis said. “I also feel mentally stronger and have more confidence in myself.”

Westlake coach Joe Bucello sees a much more relaxed Solis during preseason.

“Edgar is not as stressed as last year,” said Bucello, a former Yorktown wrestling and football standout. “I think Edgar was really worried about repeating last year. This year, he looks like he is enjoying himself more.”

During the first two weeks of practice, Solis has been determined to improve his wrestling from the top position.

“Thinking of how I lost, in that position last year, has made me more focused on holding my opponent down and staying in control,” Solis said.

Solis is eager to get the season started because he wants to prove something.

“I know because I didn’t win the section last year my opponents will come in thinking they can beat me,” Solis said. “I am going to go at them as hard as I can because I even more hungry to win the title back.”
