Westlake's Solis Begins Quest for Second Title

PURCHASES, N.Y. -- Going into the wrestling season last year, not many opponents were familiar with Westlake’s Edgar Solis. By the end of the year, however, Solis was well-known. Solis won the Section 1 Division II 145-pound title and finished with 25 wins. This season, the junior knows he will not be able to surprise anyone. In preparation for this, Solis began immersing himself in wrestling last March. “It was very exciting to win the section last year,” said Solis, before taking the mat for his first match of the season in the 36th annual Tony Carlucci Dual-Meet Tournament at Purchase College. “I trained a lot to get ready for last year, working with Tory Ferranti, who won the section last year also, and coach Joe Boxer at his wrestling club.” Winning the title was a huge leap for Solis, who was a fifth-place finisher his freshman year. Now that Solis has experienced a championship, he wants to add a second one. Solis knows that in order to accomplish this, he will have to pick up the intensity because opponents want nothing more than to beat the sectional champ. “I understand it is going to be a little more difficult this year,” said Solis, in his fourth varsity season. “The competition will be harder so I will have to train harder and work harder. This motivates me because I want to continue winning sectional titles.”
