ARDSLEY, N.Y. -- Kevin Williams slammed a single to left field in the bottom of the eighth inning Monday to drive home the game-winning run for Kensico in a thrilling 9-8 victory over Rye in the District 20 11- 12-year-old Little League playoffs at McDowell Field.
I just wanted to hit the ball somewhere and maybe get a sacrifice fly or get the run home, Williams said. It was a good game. I was a little nervous because the game was close. I got a good pitch and hit it hard.
Kensico, which has lost once, advanced and will next play an opponent to be determined Thursday, while Rye was eliminated from the double-elimination tournament with two losses.
The teams traded leads early in the game, with Kensico up 2-1 in the second innings, Rye rebounded on a two-run home run by Ryan Ciardello to take a 3-2 lead. The teams were tied at 4-4, 6-6 and 8-8 after six innings and moved to extra innings as light began to fade.
Kensico relief pitcher Kevin Kelley, who had two hits and scored twice in the game, held the Rye team scoreless in the top of the eighth inning to give his team a chance to win the bottom of the inning. Kelly allowed two runs in the sixth when Rye tied the game at 8-8.
I started out a little wild, but I just wanted to get the ball on the outside corner where they couldnt hit it, Kelly said. It was a good game for both teams hitting.
