Weather Fails to Stop Hawthorne Elementary's Halloween

MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. – Snow, cold weather and power outages across the town could not stop the annual Hawthorne Elementary School Halloween parade Monday.

“It’s been a great turnout, we’ve made some adjustments with the snow and what not but it’s been great,” said Principal Jerry Schulman.

Schulman, dressed for the day as Disney’s Buzz Lightyear character from the movie Toy Story , said he had never experienced a Halloween before with such wintery conditions.  The weather made Schulman consider rescheduling the outdoor parade, but he ultimately decided against it.

“We tinkered with the idea of having the parade on Tuesday but it’s just not the same," he said. "Today is Halloween so it’s the right day.”

Parents and teachers lined the school parking lot in warm clothing as students took rounds with their classmates dressed in costumes. Each of the three grades, kindergarten through second, had 45 minutes to parade around the lot.

Among those parents in attendance was County Executive Rob Astorino. Astorino was attending for his daughter, who is a first grade student at Hawthorne. He teased about the not-so-October weather.

“I joked with my kids this weekend and told them that I had to cancel Halloween across the county because of the weather and their faces dropped before I said I was only kidding,” Astorino said.

District Superintendent Susan Guiney was also in attendance and said that, although the district had some issues with power lines at bus stops, they were very grateful that none of the schools lost power over the weekend.

“A lot of schools across the county couldn’t be open today because they didn’t have power,” Guiney said.  “It’s great that our buildings have heat and students can come here and be warm because some of them still don’t have power at home.”
