MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. -- The Thornwood-Hawthorne Chamber of Commerce is encouraging residents to "shop local" as opposed to heading out to big corporate chain stores for their holiday shopping.
“We are reminding residents to ‘Shop Small’ and support those businesses that support our community," said lifelong Mount Pleasant resident Aimee Nichols, a Chamber member and owner of Berger Hardware.
In addition to promoting local businesses, the Chamber also wants to see Mount Pleasant residents save money during the holiday season.
More than 20,000 area homes will receive the Mount Pleasant Holiday Shopping & Dine Savings Pass between Wednesday, Nov. 26 and Friday, Nov. 28, which get shoppers $10 off a $25 purchase at participating stores through Sunday, Dec. 7.
“At a time of year when big box stores and Internet sales are at an all time high, we wanted to remind our friends and neighbors about our unique and amazing businesses," said Nichols.
Eight restaurants, including Asian Wave and License 2 Grill, and seven stores (think Eufemia’s Jewelry, Salon Allure and more) are participating. Check out the chamber’s flyer for a full list of participating businesses.
According to a Chamber press release: "Our locally owned businesses also create jobs, boost the economy and help invigorate our neighborhoods. They are the ones who never say no to supporting our schools and local non-profits and charities."
The event has been planned to coincide with American Express’ Small Business Saturday on Nov. 29 where the credit card company offers incentives of up to $30 on credit card statements or $10 off a purchase of $10 or more when shoppers use their cards to “Shop Small.”
