Bill Nye The Science Guy Appearing In Westchester

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. -- There’s a science to book signings, especially when they involve big celebs like Bill Nye, says Aimee Gautreau of the Eastchester Barnes & Noble.

Bill Nye the Science Guy will be signing the first installment of his new children's book series, “Jack and the Geniuses: At the Bottom of the World,” at the Eastchester Barnes & Noble in April.

Nye and co-author Gregory Mone will be at the store at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, to promote the first installment of their new children’s book series, “Jack and the Geniuses.”

Published by Amulet, it costs $13.95 and is aimed at kids ages eight through 12. It features the scientific adventures of intrepid orphans Jack, Ava, and Matt, who just happen to be whizzes at astronomy, math, and building robots.

Nye, best known as the host of the TV show Bill Nye the Science Guy, is notoriously persnickety about what he will or will not sign.

That factoid, and the anticipated hundreds of fans who are expected to show, means the event has to be planned with military precision, said Gautreau, the store's community business development manager..

And she ought to know; last year she had to organize an album signing involving the cast of the Broadway smash, "Hamilton."

Gautreau said she had to move 600 folks wanting signatures from all 28 cast members within a few hours.

Nye and Mone are expected to draw an enormous crowd as well.

The store is setting up a “Disney-style” queue that will snake through the store and, at the same time, give folks on the line views of Nye and Mone, who will be perched on a stage.

Priority “standing” will be given to those with wristbands that come along with the purchase of the book.

The book goes on sale at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, April 4, at the store.

Right now, Gautreau expects to have 400 copies on hand. If they sell out before the event, she will stock more.

Nye has a strict set of rules about autographing stuff.

Barnes & Noble has released those parameters for two reasons: the need to keep the line moving in a timely fashion and a wish for folks to be prepared so there will be no surprises, Gautreau said.

Nye’s formula for a book signing goes like this:

  • He WILL ONLY sign his books, namely: “Jack and the Geniuses: At the Bottom of the World,” or backlist titles such as “Unstoppable” and “Undeniable.”
  • He will NOT sign photos, memorabilia, napkins, t-shirts, tickets, and so forth.
  • Nye WILL sign multiple copies of his books for one person if necessary, but he will not personalize them.

Mone, a novelist and science journalist who has written several children’s books, will also be making appearances the same day at several middle schools in Mamaroneck, where he plans to talk about his writing process, Gautreau said.

The Eastchester Barnes & Noble is located in the Vernon Hills Shopping Center, 680 Post Road.
