Pleasantville To Hold Halloween Costume Swap

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Pleasantville’s recycling initiatives are usually focused on items such as plastic, paper and aluminum. This month, however, the village is focusing on more nontraditional items in its first Halloween costume swap.

“You can bring along some old Halloween costumes and donate them for the taking and at the same time pick up new costumes that might be of interest to you and your kids,” said Pleasantville Mayor Peter Scherer.

The swap was created by members of the Pleasantville Recycles community group and the village conservation advisory council.  The idea is to save money and reduce waste by donating and swapping out costumes from previous years that will no longer be worn. The event will kick off this Saturday, Oct. 6 at the Memorial Plaza gazebo from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  All residents are welcome to attend the swap free of charge and can take and give as much as they want.

“If you don’t have a costume to donate that’s fine,” Scherer said. “The whole purpose is to recycle old costumes because God knows you can’t be Harry Potter two years in a row.”

Halloween decorations and various paraphernalia will also be accepted at the swap.  All donated items that are not picked up will be given to a local charity.

In addition to the opening event this Saturday, the swap will continue during the same times on Oct. 13 and 20 at the gazebo. The event will coincide with the Pleasantville Farmer’s Market.

Residents who plan to attend are encouraged to bring their own shopping bags.

For more information, residents should visit the Pleasantville Recycles website.
