Deokaran had galvanized the area after saying her terminal cancer diagnosis last August left her family in danger of losing their home. A story from Daily Voice on the situation, published last year, is available here.

The Ardsley community responded with fundraisers, including just over $16,000 raised from a spaghetti dinner in November.

The seriousness of Deokaran's illness began to be questioned when she told friends that her doctor from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center had died in an earthquake in Nepal last April, but no American doctors perished in the quake, lohud.com reported.
