A convicted felon with six previous convictions is heading back behind bars for selling cocaine throughout Putnam County.

Peekskill resident Omar Miles has been sentenced to 24 years in state prison after being found guilty in September of three counts of criminal sale of a controlled substance and criminal possession of a controlled substance. He had faced 36 years in prison.

While on parole in October last year, Miles sold cocaine on three different occasions in Putnam. He was arrested by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Narcotics Enforcement Unit on Oct. 20.

Putnam County District Attorney Robert Tendy noted that prior to his arrest, Miles had 12 prior contacts with the criminal justice system and six prior felony convictions, all for drug sales.

At his sentencing, Assistant District Attorney Breanne Smith said, “Omar Miles is the definition of a recidivist, a career criminal. Each day he is in jail is one less day his drug dealing can victimize our community and one more day that the people of Putnam County are a little bit safer than before.”

Judge James Rooney added, “drug sales is not a victimless crime. It is simply profiteering on the misery of others.”
