MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. Amy Marron, former Westlake High School soccer star, expected the transition from high school soccer to the NCAA Division 1 level to be difficult. However, with leadership from some of the upperclassman, it turned out to be the opposite.
"Some of the older girls on the team helped me out it was a lot easier to adjust than what you would normally anticipate," Marron said.
The Valhalla native ended her freshman season last fall with the St. John's University women's soccer team as the their leading scorer. Marron finished the 2010 season with three goals and an assist. Two of the forward/midfielder's goals were game-winners and helped lead the Red Storm to a 6-10-2 record.
Marron was called upon early to contribute on the field and started all but one game for the Red Storm.
"We had some captain's practices before our preseason began in the summer and I think that really prepared me for the season," Marron said.
Marron is also currently playing for the New York Athletic Club women's team of the Women's Premier Soccer League. The NYAC team plays their home games in Pelham Manor, NY and they currently hold a 4-2-2 record.
"[Playing for NYAC] is helping a lot because you get to play with a lot of experienced players and it's good competition," Marron said
The Westchester native says staying close to home was an important factor in her decision to attend St. John's and that she still keeps in touch with her former coaches and teammates at Westlake.
While playing at Westlake, Marron became the New York Section 1 varsity all-time record holder with 139 goals scored. She was also a three-time all state honoree and a three-time NSCAA High School Regional All-American.
This fall, Marron will look to build upon her success at St John's and believes that the team will improve this fall with a strong returning core of players.
"We're more united now, especially now that there are not a lot of new faces coming in and that will help on the field and help us connect better,"
