A 63-year-old man died after losing control of his vehicle and striking a pillar in front of a Hudson Valley deli, according to police in Putnam County.
Edward Collins, of Holmes, a hamlet in the Town of Pawling, died around 7:30 a.m. Monday on Route 52, at Towners Road, after striking the pillar in front of Gino's Grab & Go Deli, said Kent Police Chief Alexander DiVernieri.
According to the chief, Collins was driving a 2004 Saturn south on Route 52 when he crossed into the northbound lanes, going off the roadway, and hit the pillar.
Collins was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, DiVernieri said.
Route 52 was closed for several hours with the assistance of the Lake Carmel Fire Department in order to conduct an investigation.
DiVernieri said it is unknown why Collins veered off the road but added there was no indication of drugs or alcohol at this time.
