A U.S. Postal worker has been arrested for dumping a large amount of mail in the woods in Somers.

Stephen Harris,  age and address unknown, was arrested Thursday, Oct. 25 by USPS-OIG agents and New York State Police, and charged with official misconduct and obstruction of public servants generally, said Jeffrey Powers, Assistant Special Agent In Charge with the U.S. Postal Service, Inspector General's Office.

The mail was found in Somers near the intersection of Voris Drive and Wellington Lane.

The undelivered mail was recovered by agents and the investigation is ongoing, he said.

Harris was fired shortly after his arrests, he added.

"The U.S. Postal Service employs more than 625,000 employees and is the largest civilian federal workforce in the country," he said. "This type of alleged behavior within the Postal Service is not tolerated and the overwhelming majority of Postal Service employees, which serve the public, are honest, hardworking, and trustworthy individuals who would never consider engaging in any type of criminal behavior."

Harris was arraigned at Patterson Town Court and released on his own recognizance by the court. He is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 26.
