A small kitten which was captured late last week by police in Northern Westchester has tested positive for rabies.

Health Department officials confirmed Thursday that the animal tested positive for rabies.

Pound Ridge Police retrieved the small gray and white kitten in the area of Westchester Avenue and Upper Shad Road near Scotts Corners on Friday, July 27 at 9 a.m. after receiving calls from local residents who tried to capture it, Pound Ridge Police Chief Dave Ryan announced Thursday.

While the animal was being quarantined it began to demonstrate neurologic symptoms consistent with rabies, Ryan said.

The animal was euthanized and turned over to the Westchester Health Department to have the animal tested.

One individual was scratched and bitten and others may have attempted to retrieve the kitten and left the scene prior to police arrival.

Anyone who may have come in contact with the animal’s saliva or been scratched or bitten is asked to contact both their medical professional and the Westchester Health Department Vector Unit at (914) 864-7359.
