A fire broke out shortly after 1:30 p.m. at a two-story Kathwood Road home on Monday, Dec. 10. The elderly homeowner was able to evacuate the property, but a cat was left behind as the flames spread from a first-floor bedroom to the second.

Yonkers Fire Deputy Chief Daniel Flynn said that it took 45 firefighters to battle the blaze, which was declared under control approximately an hour after it was reported, at 2:30 p.m.

The homeowner was taken to a local hospital as a precaution for treatment. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries, and first responders found a cat who survived the fire and was hiding under a bed to protect itself. The cat was unharmed.

Earlier this week, crews battled fires in Yonkers on Hawthorne Avenue, Warburton Avenue and an elderly woman died last week in a Park Avenue fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. This story is developing. Check Daily Voice for updates as they become available.
