Crews from the Yonkers Fire Department responded to a structure fire on Hawthorne Avenue shortly before 9:45 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6, Assistant Chief Thomas Fitzpatrick said. Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke coming from the rear of the building.

Fitzpatrick said that firefighters found flames on the third floor that extended to the enclosed attic area of the home. Three hoses were brought into the home, with one put into operation, he said, and the flames were quickly knocked down.

In all, 45 firefighters were called to the scene to help battle the blaze. No injuries were reported. It was the second fire crews responded to in Yonkers on Thursday. Earlier this week, a woman died in a basement fire in the city.

Utilities had to be temporarily shut down to the building due to fire and water damage. Two families have been displaced and are looking for temporary housing.

The condition of the building was not immediately clear on Friday morning, pending an inspection by the Yonkers Building Department. The cause of the fire is under investigation.  Check Daily Voice for updates.
