Briarcliff High School was ranked among the best high schools in the country at No. 31 on Newsweek’s 2015 list of America’s Top High Schools, the second-highest in Westchester County. The school achieved this ranking based on its 100 percent graduation rate and other college-readiness indicators.
“National ratings, like the one released in Newsweek, can be an exciting validation of our schools,” said Edgar McIntosh, director of instruction and human resources. “And though the rankings can shift from year to year, depending on fluctuating metrics, they can highlight some important areas of achievement. For example, we are particularly thrilled by the strength of our college readiness scores.”
In addition, despite the increased rigor of the New York State Common Core assessments mandated to students during the 2014-15 academic year, Briarcliff Manor’s third- through eighth-grade student performances were the best in the region. Todd Elementary School fifth-graders’ scores were the highest in Westchester on the math assessment and second overall in New York (out of 695 total districts).
Briarcliff fifth-grade students also were ranked third overall in the state on the English language arts assessment (out of 694 districts).
“Although this is just one measure and our teaching goes well beyond these scores, being ranked in the top three in our region is a remarkable accomplishment,” said Todd Elementary School Principal Nadine McDermott, who credited the school’s teachers for their role in creating engaging and meaningful learning experiences for students that are aligned with the new state standards.
“I truly appreciate our teachers’ hard work. I am so proud to be the principal of Todd and am grateful for the faculty’s dedication and commitment to excellence in education.”
In addition, all of the 2015 New York State test scores at the elementary through eighth-grade levels were above the state averages.
