MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. -- By an unofficial tally of 736-407, voters in Mount Pleasant have approved a nearly $59 million schools budget for the 2016-2017 school year.

Voters in the Valhalla School District also approved next year's budget, but an unofficial vote of 440 to 182. Valhalla's approved spending plan of $48.4 million calls for a 2.25 increase in 2016-17 over the current school year.

in Mount Pleasant, there were four candidates running for two seats on the district's Board of Education: Celia Cannata, Theresa Fowler, Vincent Graci and Christopher Pinchiaroli. The outcome of those races was not yet clear.

According to lohud.com, the approved Mount Pleasant budget raises the tax levy for homeowners in the town by 2.64 percent.
