“This is a great opportunity,” Pennella said. “I’ll get to see and learn about new areas. Everybody talks about Rome, but this is different. I’ll visit the town of Narni and other local spots.”

Pennella will study culture, history and language in the Umbria region in central Italy from July 12-15.

Her trip is part of a summer program with the Italian American Committee on Education. The nonprofit promotes Italian culture and language in the tristate area.

This will be Pennella's first trip outside North America. Her family is from Italy.

She began studying Italian in the sixth grade and is currently taking college-level Italian.

“I’m so excited,” she said. “I’ll be traveling around Italy for 12 days and will take some classes too. This will be a great trip. I love traveling and flying. When I’m older, I want to travel the world.”

She will travel with about 18 students and three teacher-chaperones from around the country.
