According to the state Education Department, the schools are either schools that have made the most progress or schools that have the highest achievement in the state and do not have significant gaps in student achievement that are not being closed.
The state released the list of 249 elementary, middle and high schools throughout the state that have earned "Reward School" commendations, along with 221 that have been named "Priority Schools" and 496 "Focus Schools." The new accountability designations were approved by the U.S. Department of Education in May and are based on the percentage of students demonstrating college and career readiness in English Language Arts and math. Student growth in ELA and math in grades 4-8 also are used to determine the designation of schools and districts.
“We are extremely proud of our students, staff and administrators,” Superintendent Susan Guiney said in a statement. “This achievement could not have been possible without the dedication of the student body, our K-12 staff and the community that supports them. All of us share in this success as we continue our mission of educating our students for their future.”
Along with "Reward School" designation, Westlake is eligible to compete for one of five grants of up to $150,000 each year for a two-year period to continue to broaden its educational opportunities.
Other Westchester high schools receiving "Reward School" status were Ardsley, Briarcliff, Croton, Dobbs Ferry, Hastings, Irvington, Pleasantville and Rye Neck.
